Throughout the month of August I will be taking part in a poetry challenge. Today’s (final!) challenge is to write a poem employing extended metaphor to illustrate the experience of the last thirty days.

This month has been a feverish ride, like a wave catapulting you out to sea,
Out to the unknown in the big wide world, and it’s just been me.
Struggling to keep up, and stay afloat above the waves,
You’re only swimming for a minute but somehow it feels like days.
Suddenly an idea grows, like a seed, like you’ve been pulled into a boat,
But then before you know it, you’re deserted on an island, with no cause to gloat.
And the island is dark, and your writings swirl into despair,
You feel like you’ve lost yourself, and your rhythm, was it ever really there?
But hey! There’s the end, I see it in sight! The sun hits the sea,
And you know, somehow, you’ve made it. You’re free.

I can’t believe I complete the challenge! I also can’t believe how bad I am at extended metaphors! I hope you have enjoyed reading along.
